Elementary/Secondary Education

Wausa Public School, home of the Vikings, is accredited by the State of Nebraska and is a member of the Lewis and Clark Conference, Clark Division. The school district covers 121 square miles and is in the southeast corner of Knox County, western Cedar County and northern Pierce County. The current district valuation is $108,481,300 million with an operating budget of $2,524,524. There were 210 students enrolled in grades K-12 fo the 2007-08 school year with K-6 having an enrollment of 114 and grades 7-12 with an enrollment of 96.  The school also provides facilities for a preschool operated by Golgotha Lutheran Church.  Wausa Public Schools also has a professional staff of 19 teachers. 

The high school has recently added a Vocational Agriculture section to its vocational curricular offerings.  Technology has expanded to include LDL (long distance learning, interactive audio and video capabilities, both in a dedicated room as well as similar capabilities within each individual clasroom.  Internet continues to be the pipeline to the outside world.  Paperwork is still used as a backup but is not the main mode of communication anymore. 

A recent change in administrative duties has seen the sharing of the superintendent position with neighboring Bloomfield Community School.  Each school has hired a new K-12 principal with superintendent Bob Marks traveling between the two schools.  Extracurricular activities continues to be a big part of the makeup of the secondary setting for Wausa Public Schools with the past two year producing consecutive state championships in the One-Act play division.  Small towns, small schools, and rural small town Nebraska still offers some of the best opportunities for quality living, a good education and a safe environment to live and raise a family.

Colleges

Wausa is part of the Northeast Community College area which serves 20 counties in northeast Nebraska from a main campus in Norfolk. Northeast offers more than 50 technical, vocational, business and liberal arts programs preparing the student for immediate employment or transfer to a four-year college or university. The Community Services Division provides adult and continuing education as well as other community services to the northeast Nebraska area.

Wayne State College, located 45 miles southeast of Wausa, offers 53 majors and 35 minors in eight academic divisions. The college also offers a master of business administration (MBA) degree and graduate degrees in education. The college has a Bureau for Community and Economic Development located on campus to assist northeast Nebraska communities with economic development needs. The Nebraska Business Development Center also has an office on campus.

Other area colleges and universities within a 70-mile radius include Briar Cliff University, Northeast Community College and Morningside College in Iowa, and in South Dakota, Mount Marty College and University of South Dakota.
